Located about 8 km SW of Shelburne on the Northwest arm of its harbour, Birchtown was the chief settlement for blacks in Nova Scotia. At its height it was the largest settlement of free blacks outside of Africa in the world. Most of the Population of Birchtown emigrated to Sierra Leone.
