The Black Loyalists Heritage Society has a mandate to preserve and promote the history of the Black Loyalists. Towards that end they have developed a number of ongoing projects, including a museum, numerous archaeological investigations, and a comprehensive genealogical registry of the Black Loyalists' descendants.

Formed in 1989 as the Shelburne County Cultural Awareness Society, the society changed its name in 1999 to reflect its current mission of promoting awareness of the history of all Black Loyalists. It's offices are located in historic Birchtown - just a short drive away from Shelburne and about two hours from Halifax. The society has also recently renovated two local historic buildings, the Birchtown Schoolhouse Museum and St. Paul's Anglican Church. They maintain the National Historic Monument on the historic burial ground nearby. Further details about this heritage complex can be read in the Museum Section.

The society is also currently working on an ambitious project to catalog the genealogy of the Black Loyalists from the 1770's up to the present day. If you feel that you may be a Black Loyalist descendant, we encourage you to contact the society and have yourself entered into the Black Loyalist Registry.
