Biographical Note: William Jessop was a raveling Wesleyan Methodist preacher in the late 1780's. He covered much of the area between Lockeport and Barrington, including Birchtown. What follows is his brief description of the most interesting of the three visits he makes to Birchtown.

Mon 8th, March 1788

I preached this day at Birchtown. I tarried all night with the black people, but the house being leaky I found it disagreeable, but why should I complain? It was better lodging than my dear Master had which offers from his own words; "The foxes have holes, the birds of the air have nest, but the son of man hath nowhere to lay his head".
