The Black Loyalist Heritage Society is a registered charity under the Charities Directorate of the Canada Revenue Agency. The primary areas of our charitable work include cultural programming, preservation of the historical Birchtown site, and recording family genealogy. The BLHS relies on private and public donations in order to undertake educational programming and support the operation of the historical site.

In 2009, the BLHS launched a national Sustainability Campaign to raise funds for the proposed Black Loyalist Heritage Centre.   It has been a long standing dream of the Society to create a Heritage Centre in Birchtown to preserve and proudly celebrate the legacy of the Black Loyalists – our roots, our journey to freedom, our struggle for survival and our contributions to the broader community.  The capital cost and exhibition development of the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre are projected to be $7 million.  All levels of government have recognized the importance of this project and signaled their willingness to contribute significant capital dollars to see it built.

On February 22, 2012 MP Gerald Keddy, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, and of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (Le Francophone), made a funding announcement for the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre.  Canadian Heritage will contribute $1.7 million and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency will contribute $800,000.

Citizenship & Immigration Canada, Multiculturalism will invest $189,950 in the exhibit development for the centre.  The Province of Nova Scotia committed $750,000, the Municipality of the District of Shelburne committed $50,000 and the Town of Shelburne committed $5,000 towards the project.

Of course, any project like this to be successful in the long term must not rely on government largesse alone.  We need to engage the community and raise funds both as a contribution to the capital project and also to build an endowment to ensure the sustainability of its operation over the long haul.   To date we have fund-raised $2.3 million from the private sector.

Will you join us and help to ensure this exciting and very worthwhile Black Loyalist Heritage Centre gets built and is established on a firm enough fiscal foundation to guarantee that it will thrive over the long haul.   Help us keep the memories alive by donating to this worthwhile cause.

Donors receive an official tax receipt issued in Canadian dollars. United States and International donations will be received in Canadian dollars.
